'WOYWW - 11/23/11 - Weaving My Way with a Web!'

by Mary Lou 'LuLu' Haynes

Howdy and Welcome,

This  week, after completing my 1st Textile Art Commission (yeah! photos coming soon), I was so jazzed and inspired that I decided to WEAVE a scarf! Mind you, I have only ever woven some paper strips on a scrapbook layout. Have never even woven a potholder!

But I want a new scarf for the holidays, and decided that I can make a scarf. How hard can it be? I haven't crocheted or knitted in over 4 decades, and decided to use a combination of macrame, crochet chains and weaving.

After days of researching looms, terms, yarns and weaving supplies on the 'net, I designed a modified plain-weave structure to create a 'freeform'' extreme style woven scarf using a 'cobbled together' loom and a custom 'web/net/mesh'! I'm using wool, eyelash, novelty yarns and a handspun yarn made by my artist friend Meredith B!

My design is inspired by a fantabulous piece of handmade art paper, found at this artist blog - click here for Renate Kirkpatrick.

Have you ever made a scarf? What technique did you use - weaving, crochet, knitting or other?

Come back soon to see how the finished scarf turns out! Meanwhile check out other artists studios at WOYWW!

Peace,
LuLu

Oh, I can't wait to see the finished scarf, what a wonderful idea. I have only made boring knitted and crocheted ones.

Never tried weaving, well apart from the mini loom I had when aged 8 or 9 - and I couldn't use that properly. Look forward to seeing your scarf.

I've been making scarves recently with that ribbon wool that's all the rage, there's some on my WOYWW post this week. Love the colours you've chosen for yours and look forward to seeing the finished article.

I have knitted scarves, crocheted them and also sewn some and painted silk and velvet ones. I love scarves and have the underbed drawer squashed FULL of them plus some out on display to decorate my bedroom. Look forward to seeing your's fini!

I have made a handful of scarves, some kntted and a couple from fabrics, sewn..but not woven. Am fascinated by the trouble you've gone to for something so straight forward - I wonder if you'll really get into the weaving. Lovely lovely fibres you've chosen.

Lulu, that looks soooo cooool and so exciting!!! I love this sort of art! thanks for sharing the link to the other blog too - it looks awesome. Really inspiring. Something I've been wanting to get into recently, having just revived my crochet & knitting again. Much more fun to go freeform!! Look forward to seeing how your scarf turns out.
