'WOYWW - 3/7/12 - Shhhhh! Glazing Chemist Resists The Urge!'

by Mary Lou 'LuLu' Haynes

Howdy and Welcome and Happy WOYWW!

Unusual for me this week is a tidy work space!

I was forced to clean up because I had to prepare for a scrapbooking event - and needed the worktable to organize and stage my supplies. It was painful - but the results were worth the trouble.

Before the event, I went shopping at Michaels and JoAnns and used a slew of coupons. LOVE those coupons! Most of the loot is already put away in their 'homes'.. So now I just have this last little task to do: fill the empty bottle with glazing medium.

Glazing Medium (Liquitex) and empty bottle (Michaels) -
on workstation protected with
Tim Holtz's tissue paper (Ranger)

I put a Ranger dabber top on the Michaels bottle. I prefer to spread my wet materials with a dabber instead of a brush. Quicker and neater for me.

My usual MO is adding acrylic paint to glazing medium - then I'll have a smidgeon of color available to quickly apply on the base of my art journal pages. There are drawers and drawers of different colored tinted glazes, tinted clear gessos and tinted white gessos in my studio!

But for this bottle, I'm going to resist the urge to color, and just keep the medium plain and clear.

What do you think of my idea for this glazing medium? Do you like to play chemist? Do you mix up glazes, and medium, and paint?

Thanks for stopping by! Would love for you to comment on this post - or any of my other posts, and become a Follower while you're visiting.

And 'Shhh!' stay tuned this month - for another Giveaway! Wanna see more artists digs? Go to this week's WOYWW here!

Peace,
LuLu

No, I am no chemist. I do experiment with how I use things but I have never made my own mixes, other than colour blending. Your desk looks fascinating, and I look forward to seeing more of your creations. thank you for your visit and kind comments. xx Maggie #8

Looks like a very creative desk - I don't have glazing medium (seems like I have everything else though) - do you use it as an extender with your acrylics? I guess I never wanted to invest in that many spray or squirt bottles.... Looks like fun though! thanks for the visit.

Howdy Terrie,

Thanks for commenting!

I've heard that tinted glazes can be purchased, but I like to concoct my own glazes.

My glazing recipe is usually 55% 'glazing Medium' (Liquitex) to 45% paint depending on the intensity of the pigment/color.

For paint I've experimented with MANY kinds -(fluid artists acrylic, fluid craft acrylic, tube acrylic, tube watercolor, tube gouache and many brands of re-inkers used to juice up dry stamp pads).

My goal is to end up with a tinted sheer mixture that is a translucent colour when applied to the artwork.

I'm also experimenting with less expensive alternatives to store-bought 'glazing medium' found in the art supply section. Because I use so much 'glazing medium', I need to find it cheaper and in larger quantities than at Michaels, DIck Blicks, JoAnns etc!

I've seen 'Future Floor Wax' used and 'wall paint glaze' used by variuos artists on the 'net...So far, Future dries fast, just like glazing medium, and Future is cheap. But Future has a faint odor - that I don't care for (considering my allergies and asthma)...I still need to visit the paint section of the hardware store to track down the wall glaze...Lookout ACE hardware - here I come!

Howdy Deb,
Thanks for commenting! Yes, It's called background paper - aka template theme. I got it free from IiKpulli's Free Backgrounds (see top left corner of blog for the link to Itkpulli).
